July 1979, Saint-Césaire
Archaeological excavations allowed to discover bones of a young Neandertal woman, then named Pierrette. This discovery had an incredible echo because it changed completely the admitted ideas about the Neandertal men/ Modern men succession in western Europe.
Today in Saint-Césaire
35000 years ago, on the place of the discovery, the most modern Centre of Prehistory in the world is dedicated to it.
First interpretation Centre about Prehistory in Europe, Paleosite uses exceptional technologies.

Discover the Centre about Prehistory the most modern in the world.
Paleosite stretches over a 10 hectare park and 2000m ² of air-conditioned and covered building.
Visiting Paleosite is living a unique experience. Fantastic machine to go back in time, Paleosite makes the visitor really live Prehistory, between 15 billion and 35000 years ago on the trail of Neandertal men.

On the site you can discover the archaeological deposit.
As soon as you arrive, follow the trail that leads directly to the archaeological site, Pierrette’s sanctuary, the place where she was found.

Real place of the archaeological searches, the deposit justifies the location of the Paleosite and
creates the emotion of the reality : a sanctuary for the community and a reference for the Centre.
After the visit of the archaeological site, you can get to the Centre in a panoramic elevator.

This area is an outside exhibition that shows and interprets the disappeared traces : you can discover a camp of prehistoric hunters and the daily objects of a tribe.

►Morphological comparison

In front of Neanderthal man, the room of morphological comparison presents the physical and morphological characteristics of the Neanderthal men in comparison with ours.
This room allows to pit you ludicly and scientifically against Neanderthal to better understand our differences thanks to the integral scanner, morphing and arm-wrestling techniques.

This place that visitors are free to discover at will proposes different personalized interactive experiences thanks to the Paleopass such as the hocomparison of the skeleton, skull, face, voice and strength.
